Summary

The demigod Pust is the embodiment of mischief and merriment. Throughout the autumn months his pranks and misdeeds take from the world, he takes away the orchards ability to fruit and ripen, the milk from cattle, the eggs from hens, the warmth from the earth and he picks away at daylight like a child picking out plump raisins and honeyed nuts from the solstice swirls until scant hours remain in the middle of winter.

 

It is his father, the god Kurent whose duty it is to apprehend the miscreant and kill him for his crimes so that the mortal world may yet again know the warmth and plenty of the spring and summer months, before summer’s solstice revives him and he continues with his malevolent deeds.

 

But this winter has been going on for far too long and the sun no longer rises over the horizon. Nobody knows why Kurent forsook his duty and abandoned the mortals of this realm. The gods and demigods are silent and forlorn. The mortals gather together, scrape together what few weapons and supplies they can muster and venture to the mound of the gods, where they will try and execute Pust for his many crimes against mortal kind.
